Pendergrass Earns Hawks First All-American Honors at NCWWC National Championships

CORALVILLE, Iowa. - With a seventh-place finish in the 110 division of the NCWWC National Championships, Trinity Pendergrass became the first Hawks' wrestler to secure All-American status on Saturday morning (Mar. 8) with a medical forfeit victory over Dianna Holmes of King in the seventh-place match to claim the highest national tourney placement in program history. 


The Palmer, Alaska native opened the tournament with a tight 6-4 decision loss at the hands of Sophia Cornish of Colorado Mesa before going on a four-match win streak spanning across two days to reach the All-American placement rounds. 


First was a 12-5 decision over Emily Klein of East Stroudsburg in opening round consolation action before dealing Grace Jones of Tiffin a 15-5 tech fall defeat at the 4:54 mark in the second round of wrestlebacks. 


The last match of day one for Pendergrass was a fall victory over Dinayah Vazquez of Emmanuel to become the first wrestler in program history to reach day two of the national championships. 


In need of just one more win to reach All-American status, Pendergrass delivered, taking down a hard-fought 7-4 decision over Chloe Dearwester of Presbyterian to open day two with a bang. 


A 10-0 tech fall defeat to Izabella Frezzo of New Jersey City in the next found sent the Hawks' junior to the seventh-place match, which she would claim by medical forfeit over Dianna Holmes of King to secure seventh in the nation in the 110 pound division. 


Collectively, the Hawks earned 10 victories over the tournament as five of six Quincy wrestlers in competition wee able to pick up victories. 


Maddy Barton led the best of the rest, picking up a pair of wins in the 138 division over Lili Ujfalvi of Gannon (6-3 decision) and Alexis Gomez of McKendree (6-5 decision) before making a third-round consolation exit to Marissa Sanabria of Lindenwood (5-1 decision). 


Alexa Valdez earned a 12-2 tech fall win over Leyna Rumpler of Baldwin Wallace, while Sophia Sosa dealt Kelsey Gelb of Muhlenberg a 10-0 tech fall defeat for a pair of QU wins at 160. Trinity Donovan rounded out the Quincy wins with a 10-0 opening round tech fall over Tayla Tildsley of Sacred Heart at 145. In addition, a stellar freshman season from Mackenzie Graves was brought to an end after receiving a tough draw that dealt the Bentonville, Arkansas native a pair of losses. 


Just a year removed from sending three Hawks to the national championships and collecting the program's first national tourney win in 2024, the Hawks doubled up their representation with six qualifiers while improving 10-fold in the win category with double digit victories as a team to bring a joyous close to the 24-25 campaign.
